Healing War Wounds Through Conversations

Al can find a sense of inner peace through every conversation he has about the time he spent in Vietnam.

September 9, 2019

Every day of the week, Al Donaby exercises to keep his muscles from stiffening, though it can be exhausting. Physical therapy, walking - all prescribed to keep him moving forward. But more than just moving his body, Al sees the importance of working through the emotions and suffering that he experienced in the Vietnam War. For himself, Al can find a sense of inner peace through every conversation he has about the period of time he spent in Vietnam.

This clip is part of Heroes & History, a TPT production in partnership with Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Donna Korf's experiences in Vietnam taught her it was that “you didn’t cry in front of patients.” She had to be strong – and so did the wounded soldiers.

In the summer of 2018, Twin Cities PBS brought a traveling replica – the Wall That Heals – of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that stands in Washington, D.C. Two veterans share their reflection on what it means – what it feels like – to see familiar names on the Wall That Heals, reigniting personal connections with those who died too soon.
