The Governor, House and Senate have set their budgets. Now what?

Spending priorities are set for the final weeks of the legislative session.

By Mary Lahammer

The stage is set for the rest of the 2019 Legislative Session. The leaders at the Legislature and in the Governor's Office have released their budget numbers. According to the comparison chart provided by Senate Republicans, they want to spend almost $2 billion less than the DFL House and Governor.

Lawmakers must approve a balanced budget and get Gov. Walz to sign on by May 20th, or they face a special session or eventual government shutdown. Democrats Walz and House Speaker Melissa Hortman are new to their positions, while Republican Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka is the lone returning leader in the majority.

Gov. Walz delivers his first "State of the State" address on April 3, 2019 on Almanac at the Capitol, and you can watch on TPT MN at 7 pm.
