In the latest episode of Outside Chance, we explore the wonderful world of urban farming - and in the Twin Cities, we're lucky enough to have urban farms everywhere you look. The show features sites in North Minneapolis, but you'll find community gardens all across the metro area.

Getting involved in these community spaces is easier than ever. Every garden has different rules and stipulations, but right now, in the early spring, is a great time to start seeking these places out if you feel a strong penchant to get your hands dirty. Check out this list of organizations and gardens to get involved with so you can start reaping the benefits of outdoor gardening.

Marcus Kar's Organization: Youth Farm

10 farm sites in Frogtown, East St. Paul and North Minneapolis

"Established in 1995, Youth Farm has developed from an upstart garden program into a multi-faceted youth development organization.

We engage hundreds of youth across the Twin Cities in leadership development, farm and food programming, and community events. Alongside young people, community members, and partners, we are building a youth-led food movement."

Appetite for Change

2 farm sites in North Minneapolis

"[The Appetite for Change] urban ag program fills unused land throughout North Minneapolis with flourishing farm plots. Community members tend the plots, practicing regenerative, sustainable, and organic gardening techniques. Youth are involved throughout the process too, planting seedlings, tending plots, harvesting produce, and selling it at the West Broadway Farmers Market."

Urban Roots

Opportunities for Youth in East St. Paul

"Since 1997, Urban Roots has provided paid internships to youth on the East Side of Saint Paul. Youth interns develop leadership, entrepreneurial, and life skills through our Market Garden, Conservation, and Cook Fresh Programs. Each year, 75 youth interns, ages 14-24, participate in our progressive, tiered programming, connecting to one another and to the world around them."

Urban Ventures Farm

Opportunities for Youth in Lakeville and South Minneapolis

"The mission of the Urban Ventures Farm is to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing and eating nutritious food."

Frogtown Farm

Frogtown, Saint Paul

"Frogtown Farm is an urban demonstration farm – a destination for those who seek learning, innovation, reflection, celebration, and authentic community.

One of the largest urban farms in the country. Located in the heart of the diverse and vibrant Frogtown neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota."

Open Arms

Afton, Saint Paul and Minneapolis

"Open Arms grows vegetables and herbs for our kitchen and CSA program at multiple urban farm sites in the Twin Cities.

By turning vacant lots into vibrant gardens, we are transforming underutilized urban spaces into healthy food to nourish the community. Open Farms engages volunteers and the community in agricultural issues while providing the best nourishment possible to our clients living with life-threatening illnesses."
