Gun Control Triggers a Divided Debate at the Capitol

House Democrats to pass two measures.

By Mary Lahammer

Hundreds of people filled the Minnesota State Capitol as the Legislature considers bills to expand background checks and create red-flag orders that allow law enforcement to confiscate weapons.

The testimony was emotional and lasted for hours. DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman says this is the first time she can recall gun-control bills passing the Minnesota House. The Republican-controlled Senate will prove a bigger challenge. GOP Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said that, on his watch, gun control "ain't gonna happen."

As the debate about gun-control legislation in Minnesota heats up, be sure to tune in to Almanac on Friday evenings at 7 pm and on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am on TPT2.
