Gov. Tim Walz Reflects on His First Legislative Session

By Mary Lahammer

Gov. Tim Walz has completed his first legislative session. The Democrat from Minnesota, a former teacher, made education a priority during the legislative session - and education funding was at the heart of the first bill he signed, which won increases for schools.  Referencing a statement former Gov. Jesse Ventura once made about education funding, Walz emphasized that "It's certainly not a black hole," even though the teacher's union wasn't entirely happy with the recent result.

"I think it's a good down payment, but I acknowledge the fact that we have more to do," Walz concluded. The new governor also talked about the closed-door negotiations, the transition back to the state after serving in Congress and potential executive action on prescription drug increases for insulin.
