What Happens When Minnesota's Majority Leaders Have Dinner Together?

History is made as House leaders gather at the Capitol to break bread and party lines.

By Mary Lahammer

Minnesota is known as a "state that works." That's according to the 1973 cover story in Time Magazine featuring Governor Wendell Anderson. Apparently, the late Governor, "Wendy" as he was known, organized a gathering of living governors many years ago, and that event served as inspiration for current House DFL Majority Leader Ryan Winkler to honor outgoing GOP Majority Leader Joyce Peppin. He also invited all the living leaders, and many of them attended.

With blue and red boxing gloves as center pieces,Democrats and Republicans came together to break bread and advise lawmakers on how they can work together to pass legislation in this increasingly partisan political atmosphere - and maybe even form some friendships along the way. Former presidential candidate and Governor Tim Pawlenty and the first female Speaker of the House, Dee Long, also shared their wisdom.
