MNO Goes to High School

By Ryan Klabunde

Seminar teacher Arielle Goebel discusses Creative Arts Secondary School and the Creative Arts Original project

What is Creative Arts Secondary School?

Creative Arts Secondary School is a premiere Saint Paul arts school graduating successful, creative producers, ready for college and career.

How is Creative Arts Secondary School different from other schools?

With a school community that is inclusive and supportive, Creative Arts students thrive. Students choose Creative Arts because they love challenges in both academics and the arts. Students at Creative Arts thrive through creative activities such as visits to galleries, art shows, performances, open mics, artist residencies and local business collaborations. Our learning environment includes vibrant downtown Saint Paul, including museums, the Ordway Center for Performing Arts, the Lowertown artist community and more.

Why is it important to have a secondary school focused on the arts?

Our students are motivated to pursue training that develops a personal artistic vision, be it through visual or performing arts. We meet them where they are and set rigorous artistic and academic learning goals for high school graduation and beyond.

In what ways, in addition to Creative Arts Originals, do you use MNO in your work?

MNO provides a link for our students to start seeing themselves as members of a wider artistic community. Students enjoy learning about other artists and seeing how they have developed their craft. As an added bonus, they like seeing familiar places and finding personal connections to the artists.

How is that a value to your students?

Authentic connections are important to our students. They are more likely to engage in our work at school if they can see how it applies to the world outside of school. MNO helps us make that connection.

What is the value in using MNO as a resource?

MNO's accessibility, quality production and representation of a diverse population make it a valuable resource for all students.

Why should educators take note of MNO?

Educators will appreciate the short segments, variety of art forms and authenticity of the work.
